aspe health benefit plan

ASPE stands for Accident and Sickness Program for Exchanges. Most importantly, ASPE is not a health insurance plan; it is instead a health benefits plan, and it is always a secondary policy to any other health insurance policies you may have. ASPE will be a secondary policy for all grantees while you are in Spain, as the Commission is exceptonally able to provide grantees with primary insurance through Asisa during this grant year. This means you will only apply to ASPE for the reimbursement of medical services not covered by Asisa; it is very unlikely that you will use ASPE. Remember that you will need to include the denial of coverage you receive from Asisa if you submit any claims to ASPE.

Every Fulbright grantee receives as part of the award an individual U.S.-based health benefit plan, underwritten by the U.S. Department of State (DOS) and administered by Seven Corners, Inc. This policy covers up to a maximum of $100,000 per accident or illness, after the first co-pay (the amount varies from $25 for a normal appointment to $75 for a visit to the ER, hospitalizations, or other urgent care). It is valid during your authorized grant period while you are in Spain, out of Spain on grant-related activities (i.e. research or attendance at a Fulbright event), and during direct round-trip travel.

If you ever need to call Seven Corners’ customer service with questions about your ASPE benefits, status of a claim, to inquire why a claim was denied, etc., be sure to provide your ASPE policy number and your first and last name. (The Commission will provide grantees their ASPE policy number during the first week of their grant.) Also, be sure to take down the name of the person with whom you speak and note the date and time of your inquiry, in case you ever need to refer back to the phone call.
