EMPADRONAMIENTO

The empadronamiento or padrón is a certificate that confirms that you are a resident of a given city/town and that you are living at a specific address. It is managed by the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento). Getting empadronad@ is a legal requirement for all foreigners living in Spain for over three months. We strongly advise you to get empadronado as soon as you find an apartment, even if your city does not require the empadronamiento in order to process your TIE, though most do.

If you do not have a housing contract or someone else is already empadronad@ at your apartment, you need either the landlord or the person already empadronad@ to sign the box in the bottom right-hand corner (on some forms it is the bottom left-hand corner) of the empadronamiento form which says, “Para Altas en Inscripciones Existentes” or “Autorización de Empadronamiento” (or something similar) and bring a copy of their DNI or TIE when you go to your appointment/the office.

While each ayuntamiento has its own slightly different requirements – and you should confirm the specific procedure in your town or city of residence directly – in general, you must bring your passport, your housing contract, and a filled-out empadronamiento form with you. You will need photocopies of these documents, and for your passport, you should photocopy both the data page and your visa page.
